Using shallow depth of field for Pebble Beach sunset photography

It was a beautiful evening here in the Pebble Beach area so I took my camera to one of my favorite spots along 17 Mile Drive, Bird Rock. I already had the Sony 50mm f/1.2 lens on my camera from a shoot the day before, so I left that on, to get a different perspective for sunset photography, and I knew before going there I did want to shoot at f/1.2 for shallow DoF shots. Then I saw these flowers growing atop a small cliff, and used them as the focal point and let the sun go out of focus. This extreme difference in foreground and background focus interests me and I feel reveals a different world.

Parade right out my front door in Pacific Grove!

I cannot help but feel a part of the Pacific Grove Holiday Light Parade because the staging of it takes place right on my street right in front of my house! So all I have to do is walk out my front door to see the start of the parade action. I took my camera along the route entrance to get some unique views, as well as up top from a bird’s eye viewpoint.

Andrea contacted me over the summer inquiring about having a 1950s theme photo shoot including a classic Chevy Bel-Air car they were going to rent when the visited the area in October. I thought this sounded great and over the next few months we exchanged ideas for locations and the style of the shoot. She wanted it to be a free flowing and candid photo shoot, so no off camera lighting used, just my trusty Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM lens and the sunny skies of Big Sur. They were a very fun couple to photograph, making my job easy! Thank you Andrea for choosing me as your photographer and for sharing all your great ideas (that I will use for future clients) for candid portraits!

As part of the Founders Series of personal branding photo shoots I did last year for CNM, I met Adam of Adwallet at Tincan Alley per his request to shoot there. I was a familiar with this location and its upstairs open air semi-covered space. Since his company is about making money from watching ads, he brought a cash prop for one of the photos. Creative personal branding photos for marketing CEO in ABQ

Back out on assignment for an out of state trade magazine to make more commercial portraits and personal branding photos for an upcoming article they are writing about Del Esparza. I met Del at his downtown ABQ office which had this great brick wall, conference room, and open space to make enough photos right there. However, we finished the shoot with some high impact street portraits, one of my favorite kinds of photos to make. For all these photos I used my Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM lens that excels in both small spaces still creating shallow depth of field shots, and out in open space for more landscape portrait type shots with some out of focus background. Shooting on location like this allows me to create unique backgrounds for clients. Great job in front of the camera Del!

Downtown ABQ as a unique personal branding photo shoot location

I met T.J. outside his office building in downtown Albuquerque for a thank you personal branding photo shoot for choosing me as the photographer for a big multi-week long project photographing business founders. Downtown ABQ is one of my favorite places to shoot on location in the city, especially standing out in the middle of the street and letting the bokeh take care of the background. This type of photo makes for a unique background that I could never replicate for anyone else, as the light, shadows, and even street lights are always changing.
