Canon XT

DSLR Photography Lesson with Natasha & her Canon XT

Natasha & her Canon XT DSLR on our first lesson with the Vinoy Hotel in the backgroundNew DSLR Photography Lesson student, Natasha, will be helping photograph her friend's upcoming wedding in April.  Thus, she has booked my new 4-lesson discount package in order to get up to speed as fast as she can by then, as she already previously has some photography knowledge.  In addition to learning the basic settings (aperture, ISO, WB, focus mode) that are in need of regular changing, one must also know their gear well.  Natasha's friend will be arriving at her wedding location in a horse-drawn carriage in the middle of the afternoon (tricky lighting).  So to photograph this well a fast enough shutter speed must be used to freeze the action and certain moving subject shooting skills need to be refined.

We simulated this scenario by having me walk in an arc around her while she was in AI-servo (AF-C for Nikon) and burst mode.  Through several practice rounds we found out what were the best settings to use in broad daylight, and most importantly how fast her DSLR/lens combination (Canon XT) could get a focus lock on a moving subject.  It is critical to know how many usable shots (six or two or four, etc.) one can get in a given space.  This exercise helped give Natasha some idea what she can expect when photographing the bride arriving via horse-drawn carriage for real and what can be expected of her photography gear.

We will cover more topics and scenarios like this in our next three lessons so hopefully come her friend's wedding day, she will feel as prepared as possible!

  • Strobist DSLR Photography Lesson with Steve

Our setup for Steve's strobist off camera flash DSLR photography lesson right on the beautiful St. Petersburg waterfront

Steve took his second DSLR Photography Lesson in as many weeks.  This time we focused entirely on off camera flash, or simply known as strobist.  This is currently my favorite thing about photography so it was really fun for me also to teach a lesson entirely on getting the flash of the camera.

Steve has a Canon XT and a third party flash.  We used my Yongnuo remote flash triggers and my tripod as a light stand.  I also put my HONL snoot onto his flash to help diffuse the light.

We had a number of laughs using ourselves as the models for the lesson.  Perhaps the biggest smile of all came when Steve began to realize how awesome, and how relatively easy, off camera flash photography is.  It is always very satisfying to share photography knowledge with such tangible results.

I made this portrait of Steve using my Nikon D300 and his 3rd party flash (see setup above)

  • DSLR Photography Lesson with Steve & his Canon XT

Steve recently stepped up from the point & shoot world to the DSLR world with his Canon XTWhen I first decided to offer DSLR photography lessons, I was thinking, "lots of people are buying DSLR cameras, but maybe realizing they are nowhere near as easy to use as their old point & shoot digital cameras.  There must be a market for people wanting to take lessons."  Steve fit exactly into that category.  He recently graduated from his point and shoot to a Canon XT with a pair of lenses and an external flash.  Like many people new to DSLRs, he was mostly using auto mode and not happy with the results.  The lessons I offer are designed to directly address that issue and get a person off auto mode forever (hopefully) after just a single 2-hour lesson.

It is not often I meet someone who can talk about Rhode Island, but besides our photography conversation, we also talked about the Ocean State, which I welcomed.  Steve reminded me of places I had not thought of in over 20 years, like good old Rocky Point Park, which he said is no longer open.  Maybe it will turn into a haikyo?

As is often the case, Steve was surprised and impressed with what one can do with an external flash in broad daylight.  We already have our next lesson scheduled for later this week!

  • DSLR Photography Lesson with Rhonda . . . and Mike!

Rhonda focuses her new Sigma 70-300mm lens mounted on her Canon XT during our first DSLR photography lesson in downtown Saint PetersburgThe sun made a semi-surprising appearance for the first DSLR photography lesson with Rhonda...and Mike who was there unofficially, though most welcome.  The forecast had rain in it, but hardly even any clouds and temperatures warm enough for my first jacket-less lesson in awhile.  Mike called me up last week wanting to book a lesson for his wife Rhonda as a present, which is becoming an increasingly popular type of lesson booking.

We met at the usual downtown Saint Petersburg spot and having ample sunlight could start out with positioning ourselves to make the best exposure possible by putting our back to the sun and pointing our shadows at the subject we wanted to photograph.

Mike was a good sport being a model for Rhonda all day during our DSLR photography lesson!

We covered a fairly wide range of photography topics during the 2-hour lesson, even having time to practice a little daylight flash portrait photography.  I learned from Rhonda, the family photographer, that there are many photos of Mike in the places they have traveled to, but few of her since she is always behind the lens.  It seems like for our next lesson we should practice using the tripod and self-timer so Rhonda can get into the shot too!

Rhonda and Mike make a good photography team and I am sure with what we learned in our first lesson today that Rhonda will have even better photographs of Mike at the next place they travel too!  Thanks to Mike for being a good sport all day long being our test subject and to Rhonda for being such an attentive student.
