Modular Ceramic Art Photography in Santa Fe New Mexico

Modular Ceramic Art Photography in Santa Fe New Mexico

Santa Fe Ceramic Art Photography

Santa Fe ceramic artist Noah Starer usually brings his art to my Home Studio to be photographed, but this time I took the photo studio to his art studio up in Santa Fe. Why? Because he has created a new serious of modular ceramic art that just has way too many individual pieces to move all the way to Albuquerque and also he would have to stay on site to setup each group, whereas normally they are just single pieces that I can place and photograph myself.

East Jesus Art in Slab City California

Slab City no longer like Easy Rider era

Slab City. It was a mysterious place floating in my mind for decades, ever since seeing Easy Rider. In my memory the movie showed Slab City as a place in California you can just setup and live, on empty slabs of concrete out in the desert. In preparing to go to Slab City recently, I read up some about it. It was supposedly still a lawless place where the police did not go, and were not wanted. I was actually concerned about safety issues trying to just drive through Slab City. I expected to be met with very unwelcome looks, as an outsider. Slab City, I thought, is not a place for casual visitors.

Santa Fe Art Event Photograph with Noah Starer

Santa Fe Clay ceramics event

Long time artist client Noah Starer, now Santa Fe based, was hosting an event at his new studio and gallery space at Santa Fe Clay and asked me to come photograph the event. Even though I have been photographing his ceramic artwork for over a year now, I had never heard the full process of how he makes his signature naked clay pieces, and also the process for his new work. It was very interesting to hear the ins and outs for making ceramics and how things like aluminum foil can cut hours or even days off completing a piece of ceramics! Great presentation Noah and thank you for continuing to choose me as your photographer for your work and your events!

Adding Lifestyle to Ceramics

This month makes one year I have been photographing the ceramic art of Noah Starer, a Santa Fe based artist. Typically I photograph his ceramic artwork on a paper background giving the illusion of a gray gradient, for example in these photo galleries. This time he asked me to come up with some lifestyle photos featuring his ceramics in them. The shot above represents that effort. The plate and vase holding the flower are his work. The Apple Watch, UE Megaboom bluetooth speaker, and post card are mine. The coffee cup is borrowed from Jessica and the table is thanks to her uncle who moved from Santa Fe recently and let me have it!

Ceramic artist Noah Starer, now Santa Fe based, brought his latest collection of ceramic art to the JCP Home Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico for photos to be made of 25 new pieces.  I have photographed a lot of Noah's art in the past, and was glad to be able to attend his opening weekend exhibition of his work, titled Naked Clay, at Santa Fe Clay earlier this summer!  I am glad to have seen his art career journey from Las Lunes now to Santa Fe and all the success he is deservedly having now.  He is also teaching classes at Santa Fe Clay so check for when his next classes are to learn how to create your own naked clay!

Albuquerque New Mexico Art Photography - ocean or desert

Ceramic artist Noah Starer visited my Home Studio in Albuquerque, New Mexico twice this week with a lot more of his great artwork.  Featured here are pieces he informally named, "tumbleweeds," in blue above and tan below.  He suggested people can choose between the ocean and the desert!  I like that idea a lot, and of course I would choose ocean for myself.  If you like these pieces, you can contact Noah via his website below.  He has been a long time repeat client and making creative art photos of his work has been a fun, on going challenge as the shapes and sizes of his ceramic art changes each time he brings me new pieces.
